Auschwitz – Birkenau dark history

All over the world, Auschwitz has become a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Shoah. It was established by Germans in 1940, in the suburbs of Oswiecim, a Polish city that was annexed to the Third Reich by the Nazis. As the only German concentration camp was added to the “UNESCO World Heritage List” (1979) under the name “Auschwitz-Birkenau. German Nazi concentration and extermination camp (1940-1945)”. On the territory of the camp was grounded “The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oswiecim”.

Sightseeing takes place in tours with a guide-educator or it could be an individual visit. In the program is involved the tour of the permanent exhibitions and buildings at the Auschwitz I-Main Camp and the most important original camp buildings in Auschwitz II-Birkenau: prisoner barracks, the unloading platform (ramp), and the ruins of gas chamber and crematoria II or III.

  • duration of the excursion is circa 5 hours (transfer to Oswiecim and back ca. 2 hr.; sightseeing ca. 3 hr.)
  • sightseeing of the Auschwitz I-Main Camp and Auschwitz II-Birkenau in general tour with the guide-educator or an individual visit
  • available languages of the sightseeing: English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish
  • extra paid languages of the sightseeing: Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Hebrew, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Swedish
  • museum provides shuttle bus between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau
  • all visitors must have their ID with them
  • bigger luggage should be left in the bus. The maximum size of backpacks or handbags brought into the Museum does not exceed dimensions: 30x20x10 cm.
  • while on the premises of the Museum, behave with due dignity and respect. Visitors should dress in a manner befitting a place of this type
  • visits to the Museum by children under the age of 14 are not recommended
  • disabled. Because of the need to preserve the historical authenticity of the site of the Memorial it may be difficult for disabled persons to move around the grounds and buildings
  • taking pictures for own purpose is allowed for some exceptions

  • transfer along the route of the tour (the price is given for the transfer from Katowice)

  • in the case of an individual visit, assistance from an office representative is possible (providing basic information and translation)
  • parking fee

  • ticket to the museum (in the case of an individual visit, the ticket is free)
